Holiday Harmony - Helping Your Anxious Child Navigate Big Emotions with Ease

The holiday season can be a magical time, but it can also be overwhelming for children and teens who struggle with anxiety. With packed schedules, new social interactions, and sensory overload from lights, sounds, decorations, etc., it’s no wonder that big feelings can emerge.

As a parent, you have a powerful role in helping your child navigate these emotions. Here are 5 ways that you can support your anxious child/teen during this festive but sometimes difficult season.

  1. Prepare in Advance

    • Discuss the plan - Share with your child what is on the schedule, including who they may see there, what activities are planned, and when things will happen

  2. Practice Calm Communication

    • Use a soothing tone, validate their feelings, and encourage open dialogue (ex: “I understand this feels hard right now. Is there anything I can do to help?”)

  3. Create Predictable Routines

    • Stick to sleep schedules - Try to make sure your child gets enough rest, even if events run late.

    • Plan for downtime - Build quiet moments into the day where your child can relax and recharge

  4. Equip Them with Coping Tools

    • Create a calming kit - Fill a box/bag/etc. with helpful items such as fidget toys, headphones, a favorite book, etc. You can check out my top recommended items to include by following this link.

  5. Celebrate Small Wins

  • Acknowledge their bravery - Praise your child for trying new things or managing tough situations.
